features
over 300 American artisans, each specializing in a different kind
of "Art
Furniture" (and home accessories). The result is a bright,
eclectic mix of one of a kind "livable art". Owner
Pearl Maremont describes her gallery as "an exercise
in anti-style. I believe in going against what is totally expected
- combining two conflicting elements while still creating balance."
When you enter you
understand exactly what she means. It's a mix of colors and shapes,
and as in nature it works together in perfect harmony. It is the
place one can find the special "Furniture Art" that completes
a room. The gallery changes daily, because most of the items are
one-of-a-kind and are sold off the floor. We custom order items
for clients when an item has been sold. is
a whimsical unexpected experience.
"I've always been involved in the world of art." says Maremont. With over 15 years in interior design and an education in fine arts, Maremont bought, decorated and sold several homes in Connecticut, New York, and California. "As I finished each home, various acquaintances would ask me to design their homes. By word of mouth I created my interior design business. You could say that I entered this industry by accident."
In June 1997 Maremont applied her love and knowledge of American art to opening her gallery on Santa Monica's upscale Montana Avenue. "I've always believed that decorative arts have an appreciable value similar to fine art, whether it's hand-painted furniture, a table lamp, tableware or accessories," she explains.
As
a result, each artist specializes in
a different area of home furnishings. "I
wanted to take home furnishings to a different
level. Customers have a choice. They can purchase
a lamp from a department store or they can own
something that is both functional and a unique
work of art." It's
also part of a growing trend in American interiors:
filling homes with furniture and home accessories
that are handcrafted and unique. "Art lifts
your spirits, people are so delighted when they
walk in here - I want my clients to enter their
front doors and feel that excitement in their
own homes."
With
all the home furnishing stores
out there, my message to consumers is to
apply art to their everyday lives." Through
her store, Maremont has certainly accomplished
this creatively and with .
